Every week, the Giving Children Hope team provides backpacks to more than 1,000 Orange and Los Angeles County families in crisis, but every once in a while, we receive word of a family who needs some extra help. Two weeks ago, we were notified that one of our We’ve Got Your Back families was in desperate need of a working refrigerator and stove for their small apartment. Angela, a single mom of five children, was told that her current stove and refrigerator both had leaks that were not within the safety regulations for social services. Angela reached out to Gabby, her school’s liaison, to notify her of the situation and to ask if there was any way Gabby could help.
Each We’ve Got Your Back school that we partner with has a liaison who serves as the representative for the children we serve. As liaisons, they ensure that the children in our We’ve Got Your Back program are consistently receiving their backpacks, but they also stand with these families in times of a crisis. Gabby, the liaison at Angela’s school, is someone we consider an angel around here at Giving Children Hope. Knowing that we have a network of partners, as well as a warehouse of full of relief supplies, she reached out to us and shared the story of Angela and her family.
When we shared Angela’s story with Grace Fellowship Church in Costa Mesa and Teen Leadership Foundation, they jumped at the opportunity to sponsor the purchase of a brand new refrigerator and stove for Angela and her family and had the appliances delivered to their home. We also reached out to the Buena Park Women’s Club, and they provided the family with groceries to fill their brand new fridge, including chicken, frozen pizzas, eggs, milk, and loaves of bread. We had a brand new dining room table and chairs in our warehouse as well that we were able to provide for Angela’s home.

We delivered the table, chairs, and groceries on Friday at the same time the refrigerator and stove were being delivered. Angela was overjoyed and a little overwhelmed with all the help she was receiving. As she shared more of her story and how she wants to be the best for her children, she thanked everyone for their involvement in making sure her kids can stay with her.

It takes a village, and we are so proud to be a part of this village. Thank you, Grace Fellowship Church, Teen Leadership Foundation, and the Buena Park Women’s Club for partnering with us to deliver hope to this family. Last week’s collaboration reminded us why we chose the name Giving Children Hope. Angela’s children now have a fully functioning refrigerator, stove, dining room table, and groceries to fill their refrigerator. They now know that not only does their mom have their back, but others in the community are supporting them to have hope and reach their dreams.
