Beds for Local Families

Helping children in our community get a better night’s sleep

Sleep. It’s one of the most important factors necessary for one’s health, especially a child’s health. When I think of sleep, I think of my bed, but some children in our We’ve Got Your Back program don’t get to experience the luxury of a bed. Imagine the effect on your sleep when your sleeping situation is on the floor, or a window sill, or even a bathtub. You’re probably thinking, there’s no way someone sleeps in the bathtub, but for some children in our community, that’s their reality.

Several months ago, we launched a partnership with Zula Bed and Relief Bed with one focus in mind: helping children in our community get better sleep. Zula Bed is a new mattress company with a goal to give back. For every 10 mattresses that Zula Bed sells, they provide us with a Relief Bed to give to one of our local children in need.

When we received our first shipment of Relief Beds, we reached out to our school liaisons and principals, asking if they had children in their schools who would benefit from a Relief Bed. One principal emailed back immediately sharing a story about two students in 4th grade who both slept on the floor at home and dreamed of having a bed so they could get better sleep at night. When we delivered the Relief Beds to those two students, they ran into the office to see them. As we shared with them that these beds were now theirs so they no longer had to sleep on the floor, one of the boys threw his hands up in the air and shouted, “YES!”.

We also got to deliver 10 Relief Beds to a school in Santa Ana and visit one of the homes of one of the families receiving a Relief Bed.  Angela, a single mother of 5 children, lives in a tiny studio apartment. Her 4 older children have beds, but the youngest sleeps with her either on a small couch or the floor. The Relief Bed allows the mom to sleep on the relief bed and the child to sleep on the couch, so it’s more comfortable for the both of them and they can both get a better night’s sleep.

After delivering these 12 Relief Beds, we know that this is just the beginning. This collaboration with Zula Bed and Relief Bed will continue to provide more children in our community with a better night’s sleep. Education is one of the first steps to helping these families reach self-sufficiency. We strongly believe that with a better night’s sleep, these kids will be able to better focus in school and receive the education they deserve.

Thank you, Zula Bed and Relief Bed for partnering with us to provide these children and their families with hope.
