April’s Volunteer of the Month

If anyone knows what it’s like to travel to all 50 states and serve our country through the Naval Air Force, it would be our beloved volunteer, Gary Leister. Gary worked as a locomotive engineer at Union Pacific Railroad for 38 years before he decided to retire 3 years ago. He currently resides in Fullerton and has been blessed with good health, a beautiful wife, a 26-year-old son, and a wonderful church called Wilshire Avenue.

Two years ago, Executive Director Sean Lawrence was invited to speak about Giving Children Hope at Wilshire Avenue. At that time, Gary Leister was sitting in the pews, prepared to give back to the community he’s called home for over 30 years. He came to our warehouse soon after and has been a faithful We’ve Got Your Back volunteer for two years now. Whether he’s packing backpacks, sorting through food, or tending our garden, Gary is always willing to help. What we really love about Gary is his favorite part about volunteering here – he loves that he’s able to reciprocate the resources and time he’s been blessed with to bless others..When asked what he would tell someone who is thinking of volunteering at Giving Children Hope, he replied with, “Absolutely do it.” We are so grateful for the compassion and servant-like heart that he brings with him every Monday morning.

Gary is a world changer, and you can be too!
